Tech Shop opens in San Francisco!

Yesterday I attended the opening of the Tech Shop in San Francisco, http://techshop.ws/tssf.html. I was impressed. The shop is located in downtown SF, slightly SOMA, about a block from my favorite straight bar (http://www.thechieftain.com/ – in truth, I just go there for a Guinness and Shepard’s Pie on occasion, but that counts), and also about a block from the Intercontinental Hotel, which is a weird place. Also a block from the San Francisco Center, which is a great mall, as malls go.

But back to my impressions. The facility is huge, and dedicated to making physical objects. They have presses, injectors, printers (2d and 3d), cutters, benders, blasters – the works. The staff seems knowledgeable and friendly.

What struck me was how close it was to downtown, and how palpable the enthusiasm of the crowd was. So much of what is produced now is software, it was inspiring to see people drawn the possibility of making something physical. Slow food, slow stuff. It made me happy to live in SF.
